Working hours calculator: weekly hours, breaks and overtime in Türkiye
By MedyAjans · Updated:
Enter the start, end and break for each day of the week; the calculator works out net working time, a rest break below the minimum, whether the 11-hour daily and 7.5-hour night limits are exceeded and how many of the week’s hours are overtime under Turkish Labour Law.
Weekly working hours calculator
Enter times in 24-hour format. If the end is before the start, the shift is taken to run into the next day (e.g. 22:00–06:00).
The result is for information only; it shows the statutory minimum and is not legal or payroll advice. What you enter never leaves your device.
How are working hours calculated?
Working time is gross time at work minus rest breaks: rest breaks do not count as working time (art. 68). Someone working 08:30–18:30 with a 1-hour break has 10 hours gross and 9 hours of net working time. The weekly total is the sum of the daily net times.
As a rule, working time is at most 45 hours a week and, unless agreed otherwise, is divided equally over the working days of the week (art. 63). In a six-day workplace that is 7.5 hours a day; in a five-day workplace, 9 hours.
Rest breaks: how many minutes are required?
The law ties the minimum break to the length of the working day (art. 68). The calculator compares the break you enter with this table using net time and warns if it is short. If you leave the break blank, the minimum in the table is assumed.
| Net daily work | Minimum rest break |
|---|---|
| 4 hours or less | 15 minutes |
| More than 4 hours, up to 7.5 hours (7.5 included) | 30 minutes |
| More than 7.5 hours | 1 hour |
Source: Law 4857 art. 68. The periods are minimums and are given without interruption as a rule; they may be split by contract, taking account of climate, season, local custom and the nature of the work.
The 11-hour daily and 7.5-hour night limits
Daily working time may not exceed 11 hours in any way (Regulation on Working Time under the Labour Law art. 4; also the 11-hour daily limit under averaging, Law 4857 art. 63). The calculator flags a day whose net time exceeds 11 hours; consent to overtime does not lift this limit.
In working life, night is the period starting at 20:00 at the latest, ending at 06:00 at the earliest and lasting at most 11 hours; night work may not exceed 7.5 hours (art. 69). In tourism, private security, health services and petroleum exploration and drilling it may be exceeded with the employee’s written consent. A shift more than half of which falls in the night period counts as a night shift (Regulation on Special Procedures for Work Carried Out in Shifts art. 7), and no overtime may be worked on night work.
| Shift (break) | Net time | In the night period | Night shift? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 08:00–17:00 (60 min) | 8 h | 0 | No |
| 16:00–24:00 (30 min) | 7 h 30 min | ≈ 3 h 45 min | No (not more than half) |
| 22:00–06:00 (30 min) | 7 h 30 min | 7 h 30 min | Yes |
| 20:00–08:00 (60 min) | 11 h | ≈ 9 h 10 min | Yes, 7.5 hours exceeded |
The break is deducted from the day and night parts of the shift in proportion to their length (the same assumption as our product’s calculation).
How many overtime hours? The weekly bands
The weekly total splits into three bands (art. 41): up to the contractual hours, normal work; where the contract is below 45 hours, the part above the contract and up to 45 hours, work beyond contractual hours (+25%); the part above 45 hours, overtime (+50%). To work out the amount, use the overtime pay calculator.
Example. Monday–Friday 08:30–18:30 (1-hour break) is 9 hours a day, 45 hours a week. If the same person works Saturday 09:00–13:00 (15-minute break), 3 hours 45 minutes are added: 48 hours 45 minutes in total, of which 3 hours 45 minutes are overtime. At an hourly rate of ₺100 that is 3.75 × 150 = ₺562.50.
If working-time averaging applies
By agreement, weekly hours may be distributed differently over the days; in that case work above 45 hours in some weeks is not overtime, provided the weekly average over two months does not exceed 45 hours (art. 63). The calculator measures one week; where averaging applies, read the result together with the period average. Details: working-time averaging.
Recording it correctly in the timesheet
The most common mistakes in a manual sheet are not deducting the break and writing a shift that runs past midnight on the wrong day. In our workforce management system net time, short breaks, the 11-hour and 7.5-hour night warnings and the weekly overtime bands are calculated from the clock-in record every day with the same rules.
