Hourly wage calculation in Türkiye: from monthly salary to hourly rate
Updated:
Overtime, short days and public holiday pay all start from the same number: the hourly rate. The law does not say how to find it; practice is settled. This guide gives the method, the divisor that changes for part-time staff and a consistent worked example.
Why 225?
The 45-hour week (art. 63) divided over six days gives 7.5 hours a day. The monthly wage is taken to cover 30 days: 30 × 7.5 = 225 hours. This divisor is not written in Law 4857; it is settled payroll practice. The daily wage is found in practice by dividing the monthly wage by 30.
The hourly rate step by step
| Step | Calculation | Example (gross monthly 30,000 TL) |
|---|---|---|
| Daily wage | Monthly ÷ 30 | 1,000 TL |
| Hourly rate | Monthly ÷ 225 | 133.33 TL |
| Overtime hour (+50%) | Hourly rate × 1.5 | 200 TL |
| Hour beyond contract (+25%) | Hourly rate × 1.25 | 166.67 TL |
| Public holiday day worked | Daily wage × 1 (extra) | 1,000 TL |
Amounts are gross. Each item is rounded to the kuruş separately; the total is the sum of the rounded items.
Overtime example. The same employee worked 49 hours in a week. The 4 hours above 45 are overtime (art. 41): 4 × 200 = 800 TL. Pay for the normal 45 hours is already in the monthly wage; no normal hourly pay is added on top of the overtime amount.
The divisor for part-time staff
For an employee contracted for fewer than 45 hours a week, dividing by 225 understates the hourly rate and underpays the premium. The same logic applies to the contractual hours: weekly hours ÷ 6 × 30.
Example. For someone working 25 hours a week on a gross monthly 12,500 TL, the divisor is 25 ÷ 6 × 30 = 125 hours; the hourly rate is 12,500 ÷ 125 = 100 TL. Divided by 225 it would be 55.56 TL, and every extra hour would be paid at almost half price.
Hourly-paid and daily-paid employees
Where pay is agreed per hour, the hourly rate is read from the contract; no division is needed. For daily-paid staff the hourly rate is the daily wage divided by 7.5. For these employees weekly rest and public holiday pay are not inside a monthly wage and are calculated separately (art. 46, art. 47).
Gross versus net
Overtime and holiday pay are calculated on the gross wage; tax and social security deductions are made in payroll. Calculating the hourly rate from the net wage lowers the result. For minimum-wage employees the net amount also changes because of tax exemptions; leave the final calculation to your payroll accountant.
Our workforce management system divides the monthly wage by 225 or, for part-time staff, by a divisor reduced to the contractual hours, shows the premium as soon as an overtime request arrives and rounds items to the kuruş. It does not run payroll; it hands the timesheet to an accountant package. Details: overtime calculation guide.

Hourly wage calculation: frequently asked questions
How is the hourly wage calculated in Türkiye?
For monthly-paid employees the gross monthly wage is divided by 225. If the gross monthly wage is 22,500 TL, the hourly rate is 22,500 ÷ 225 = 100 TL. The divisor is not in the law; it is settled payroll practice that comes from dividing the 45-hour week over six days.
How is the daily wage found?
For monthly-paid employees the monthly wage is divided by 30 in practice. For a gross monthly 30,000 TL the daily wage is 1,000 TL. The extra day’s pay for working on a public holiday (art. 47) is calculated from this amount.
How is the hourly rate of a part-time employee calculated?
The divisor shrinks to the contractual weekly hours: weekly hours ÷ 6 × 30. For someone working 25 hours a week on a gross monthly 12,500 TL the divisor is 125 and the hourly rate 100 TL. Dividing by 225 understates the hourly rate and underpays the premium.
Is the hourly rate calculated gross or net?
Overtime, short days and holiday pay are calculated on the gross wage; tax and social security deductions are made in payroll. A calculation on the net wage shows the employee’s claim lower than it is.
